Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last week the state House of Representatives passed an important piece of legislation for contractors and the environment in Washington state.

House Bill 1695 would require the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) work with local government entities and Washington-based construction industry associations to develop criteria and objectives for the recycling and reusing of certain cement and concrete mixtures.

I spoke in support of the legislation when it came up for a vote on the House floor because of the benefits to the environment and the contractors in the 42nd District. You can view my floor speech by clicking: Van Werven floor speech on HB 1695.

Rep. Van Werven speaks on the House floorThe state is in the middle of a number of projects that will result in an abundance of recyclable and reusable construction materials. Having this legislation in place to reuse these materials in new projects is financially and environmentally responsible.

This measure demonstrates business and the environment can work together or coexist. The moment is right to demonstrate that potentially competitive interests can work together to achieve multiple good outcomes.

Sincerely,

Luanne Van Werven
